Parris Island
Beaufort, Fripp Island, Harbor Island and Hunting Island are full of wonderful activities for our guests.
Parris island is the home to the famous Marine training base.
Parris island was purchased from the Spanish in 1861 by Colonel Alexander Parris as
well as 8 other small island around Parris Island. When Parris bought the island,
his original intent was to use it as a plantation, which he did up until the civil
war when Sherman made his march to the sea. The Marines occupied the island at
first as a part of the Union out of Port Royal, South Carolina.
November 1, 1915 was the day that Parris island officially became a Marine Corps
Recruit Depot. Parris island attracts men east of the Mississippi and women from
all over the country to enlist for the United States Marines.
Parris Island has a Millitary Museaum that is open to the public that shows various
uniforms and other scenes from differnet war periods that the marines have
participated in. There is also a screening room that plays a short recruitment
video about the marines.
The Parris Island Millitary Museam also has a well stocked gift shop that includes
several different items from all branches of the armed forces, but mainly focuses
on the Marines.
