Built in the 1790s by a prosperous merchant. In 1825, the Marquis de Lafayette was a house guest here. This Federal-style home was taken over by Union officers as their headquarters during the Civil War.
Penn Center – the site of one of the country’s first schools for freed slaves and one of the most significant African American historical and cultural institutions in existence today.

Displays include a recreation of an 1800’s plantation parlor and other exhibits contributed by local museums. Memorabilia from the half-dozen or so movies made in the area including “Big Chill” and “Prince of Tides.”

This once majestic sanctuary was burned and destroyed by Prevost’s British troops in 1779. It has stood in ruins for over 120 years. Despite this fact, it is still used for special religious services. All that remains are its stately columns and building shell.
